Dear Valued Client,
We were having a great day in our office and then the phone lines started to ring off the hook and endless email messages began to flood into my inbox. Owners from all over the world, wanted to know how the current Financial Crisis will affect their businesses. It’s impossible to predict the outcome, but until we do have answers, it is more important than ever to work “SMART!”
Business is still there, but you may have to work harder to surface job orders and top talent. You may not write as many job orders, but you WILL fill a higher percentage of the orders you write! So much will depend on your attitude and the actions you take in the next few days.
OWNERS: It is important that you monitor your accounts receivable, especially for those of you specializing in temp or contract. If your clients are affected by tightening cash flow, you can’t afford to become their bank, because that could eliminate your profits or jeopardize your business.
MANAGERS: Your team will take their direction from you. It’s time to advise them to work on the “hot orders.” Clients must be called to determine current top priorities – which may have changed. We are paid on RESULTS not efforts and you need to put your efforts where you know you can produce results. We now have a chance to “listen” to the concerns of our clients and position ourselves as a trusted advisor. Within any crises, there are always business opportunities.
RECRUITERS: (Candidates) It is important to realize your candidates may be more hesitant to change jobs. They will however look to you for facts and the WIIFM to make a change.
There will also be those people who will WANT to change their positions because of current economic conditions. You will benefit either way! There is also the reality that baby boomers are retiring at a rate of one every eight seconds.
(Clients) This just stresses the importance of having a broad client base. When many firms went out of business between 2001 – 2003, one of the greatest reasons was that over 75% of their revenues came from less than ten clients. If you are working the client development side of our profession, you should have thirty clients. Ten of those clients should be key accounts who think of you first and hire multiple candidates, in your area of specialization each year. The next twenty clients are your back up accounts, who utilize you as a resource for talent and hire at least one or two individuals in your area of specialization.
The good news is you will our government take actions to protect us in the next few days. They will not allow our economy to crash like we’ve seen happen in other countries. We live in one of the greatest countries on earth, we work in the greatest profession and the lack of top talent is not going away!
